"Medical Appointments on the Web," an initiative of the Naval Medical Center, San Diego and the eBusiness Operations Office, dramatically improves patient care and convenience. Currently, patients schedule specialty appointments by visiting the clinic in person, navigating an understaffed call center, or waiting for mail notification. This project is a Web-based tool that allows clinic staff to schedule multiple appointments for their patients before the initial visit is even concluded.
The Service Deputy Surgeons General recently selected Medical Appointments for implementation throughout the Department of Defense at a cost of $2 million. The Surgeons General had considered an alternative solution that would have cost an additional $18 million and would have provided less functionality.
Medical Appointments on the Web was developed as an initiative of the DON eBusiness Pilot Project Program. Administered by the DON eBusiness Operations Office, located at the Naval Supply Systems Command, Mechanicsburg, Pa., this program funds short-term (90-120 day) e-business projects that are proposed and executed by Navy commands. Pilot funding allows commands to pursue exceptional ideas in a timely manner.
More information on the pilot project program, including how to submit a proposal, is available under the "pilot projects" tab at www. don-ebusiness. navsup.navy.mil.
