Department of the Navy wins CIO Council Award - News You Can Use

Navy Supply Corps Newsletter, March-April, 2003

WASHINGTON (Navy News Service) -- The Department of the Navy (DON) was presented a Chief Information Officer (CIO) Council Award from the Federal CIO Council Nov. 20 in recognition of the successful e-business pilot, project, Medical Appointments on the Web.

The award recognizes efforts that reflect the Federal CIO Council goals of empowering citizens through improved access to and use of government information.

"It is wonderful that our eBusiness pilot project team is being recognized for their dedication and untiring efforts on the medical appointments initiative, said Karen Meloy, Assistant Deputy Commander of the DON eBusiness Operations Office. "I am particularly proud of their achievement in this effort as it is being adopted DoD-wide."

"Medical Appointments on the Web," an initiative of the Naval Medical Center, San Diego and the eBusiness Operations Office, dramatically improves patient care and convenience. Currently, patients schedule specialty appointments by visiting the clinic in person, navigating an understaffed call center, or waiting for mail notification. This project is a Web-based tool that allows clinic staff to schedule multiple appointments for their patients before the initial visit is even concluded.

The Service Deputy Surgeons General recently selected Medical Appointments for implementation throughout the Department of Defense at a cost of $2 million. The Surgeons General had considered an alternative solution that would have cost an additional $18 million and would have provided less functionality.

Medical Appointments on the Web was developed as an initiative of the DON eBusiness Pilot Project Program. Administered by the DON eBusiness Operations Office, located at the Naval Supply Systems Command, Mechanicsburg, Pa., this program funds short-term (90-120 day) e-business projects that are proposed and executed by Navy commands. Pilot funding allows commands to pursue exceptional ideas in a timely manner.

More information on the pilot project program, including how to submit a proposal, is available under the "pilot projects" tab at www. don-ebusiness. navsup.navy.mil.
