Naval Supply Systems Command names 2008 Sailor of the Year

Navy Supply Corps Newsletter, March-April, 2009

Storekeeper 1st Class (Air Warfare/ Surface Warfare) Daryl A. Swearson, Leading Petty Officer (LPO), Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) Puget Sound Detachment Everett, Wash., has been named Naval Supply Systems Command's 2008 Sailor of the Year.

He received this honor for superbly supervising logistic operations for one nuclear aircraft carrier, five surface combatant ships, an Intermediate Maintenance Facility and 21 tenant commands. Assigned as the LPO for 16 enlisted personnel, he demonstrated extraordinary leadership, managerial skills, and technical expertise in the performance of his duties.

Petty Officer Swearson was named FISC Senior Sailor of the Year on Feb. 5. He was previously named Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) Puget Sound's Senior Sailor of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2007 and FISC Puget Sound's Sailor of the Year for 2007 and 2008.

A native of Karlsruhe, N.D., Swearson was meritoriously advanced to E-3 for good performance upon completion of boot camp at RTC Great Lakes, Ill. Following graduation, he attended Aviation Storekeeper "A" School in Meridian, Miss.

His successful tours have included serving as bulk supply issue and HAZMAT storeroom custodian at NAS Keflavik; financial accounting specialist aboard the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN; and lead scheduler at the Priority Material Office in Bremerton, Wash.--a position that required constant monitoring of ship schedules. In addition, Petty Officer Swearson was assigned to VAQ-138 where he served as LPO and Command Career Counselor for 200 enlisted personnel.

Selection for Sailor of the Year was a difficult one. In the running were two other outstanding Sailors who have gone above and beyond their calls to duty. Mineman First Class Rebecca Cross, NOLSC headquarters, Norfolk, Va., and SK1 William Barr, Naval Inventory Control Point, Mechanicsburg, Pa., both demonstrated superior performance and have made significant contributions to the NAVSUP Enterprise.

"I believe in the importance of the Supply Community--Supply Officers, enlisted, and civilians all working together. Our supply enlisted Sailors are an absolute essential part of our success, whether we're afloat or ashore and Petty Officer Swearson has demonstrated how one individual in the community can make a huge difference. Please join me in congratulating him on a job well done," said Rear Adm. Mike Lyden, Chief of Supply Corps and Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command.
