Concrete Producer, The, Oct, 2003

The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute has a full lineup of events in store at its 49th Annual PCI Convention and Exhibition, the 3rd PCI/FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) International Symposium on High Performance Concrete, and the National Bridge Conference. It all takes place at Renaissance Orlando Resort at Seaworld in Orlando, Fla., Oct. 19-22.

"We collaborate to do what we cannot do as individual companies-improve the state-of-the-art products, systems, and services through a uniquely integrated campaign of technology and marketing," says Michael Quinlan, PCI chairman. "We are offering 22 complete sessions in Orlando. Our topics range from R&D to marketing and from seismic to architectural. Also this year, we are hosting three sessions of special interest. They are student education, integrated precast solutions, and plant safety with a focus on fall protection. Each of these topics represents a unique opportunity or concern for our industry."

Industry suppliers also will display their products, materials, and services. "It is an opportunity to talk with industry experts concerning the wide range of applications and techniques available to precast concrete manufacturers," Quinlan says.

"To our friends in the Federal Highway Administration, we express our gratitude for the opportunity to organize another international HPC (high-performance concrete) symposium," Quinlan adds. "High-performance concrete represents a major asset to our industry marketing arsenal, an asset that is backed up by a wealth of technological expertise." Twelve full sessions on HPC will be presented at the symposium.

One standout session will be Topics on the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (ASSHTO) Specifications, on Oct. 20. Topics will include Compilations and Evaluation of Results from High Performance Concrete Bridge Projects, Confinement of Prestressed Concrete Piling for Seismic Loads, and Structural Behavior of Flexural Members with High Strength Concrete.

Convention officers are Quinlan, who also is president of Gate Prestress Co.; Fred Heldenfels IV, PCI vice chairman and president of Heldenfels Enterprises; Charles McCarthy, PCI secretary/treasurer and executive vice president of Rocky Mountain Prestress; and James Toscas, PCI president.

The second annual PCI Education Foundation Golf Tournament will be Friday, Oct. 17. Tuesday will include fine dining, dancing, live entertainment, and recognition of winning producer members in the annual national Design Awards Program.
