New York State Education Building Albany, New York

Masonry Construction, Feb, 2003

The masonry restoration of the south, west, and portions of the east elevations of the Education Building included structural and cleaning of the exterior facade and columns, repairs to the portico walkway, and removal of bird The building includes load-bearing colonnade of Corinthian columns (reputedly the longest in the world), Danby marble and terra cotta, and granite-faced wall surfaces below the portico walkway.

Chipped and cracked terra cotta was repaired with synthetic patching materials without having to replace any of the very ornamental units. Marble repairs included numerous dutchmen, which were fabricated with stone from, the original geologic formation in Vermont; synthetic patches were used for smaller chips and cracks. The mortar mix for repointing was compatible with the existing product from the standpoint of color, texture, and physical properties. Thousands of holes created by the removal of bird proofing wire anchors were patched.
