Contest determines North Carolina's top apprentice

Masonry Construction, Feb, 2005 by Ron Holzhauer

Jaime Salas of Brodie Contractors, Raleigh, won the 51st Annual North Carolina Department of Labor State Fair Masonry Apprentice Skills Contest. Participating in the awards presentation were (from left) Salas, North Carolina Masonry Contractors Association President Danks Burton, 2nd place finisher Dallas Caudle of McGee Brothers, 3rd place finisher Justin Troutman of Heritage Masonry, and 4th place finisher Mason Widenhouse of Alan Widenhouse Enterprises.

Salas and Caudle actually earned the same number of points during the competition, and the winner was selected based on a predetermined tie breaker. Troutman was just one point back in the tightly contested event.

Seventeen apprentices from 12 firms participated. North Carolina member firms and chapters donated $8600 in cash, tools, and materials for the contest.
