Michigan Masonry Institute picks project winners

The Masonry Institute of Michigan Inc and the AIA Michigan recently selected seven state architectural projects as recipients of their "Excellence in Masonry Design Awards." To qualify, the project must utilize masonry as the primary building material or must show that masonry was an important element in the overall solution of the design.

The seven projects selected to receive the coveted bronze "M-Award" were:

* Our Lady of Good Counsel, Plymouth (top right): mason, Baker Construction Co.; architect, HarleyEllis; suppliers, Glen-Gery Brick and Grand Blanc Cement Products

* Oakland County Work Release Facility, Pontiac (bottom right): mason, Robovitsky Inc.; architect, ARCADIS; suppliers, Best Block Co. and Belden Brick Sales Co.

* Community Recreation Center, Livonia: mason, Brazen & Greer Masonry Inc.; architects, Neumann/Smith Associates and Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture; supplier, Theut Products Inc.

* Oakland Schools Office & Conference Center, Waterford: mason, Masonry Developers Inc.; architect, French Associates Inc.; supplier, Grand Blanc Cement Products

* St. Paul Catholic Church Addition, Grosse Pointe Farms (left): mason, Masonry Placement & Service Co.; architect, Constantine George Pappas AIA Architecture/Planning; suppliers, Best Block Co. and Dixie Cut Stone & Marble Inc.

* High School Auditorium, Madison Heights: mason, MACO Masonry & Building LLC; architect, DiClemente Siegel Design Inc.; supplier, Van Poppelen Bros.

* University Commons, Ann Arbor: mason, DS Building Contractors Inc.; architect, Hobbs + Black Associates Inc.; supplier, Best Block Co.
