Buckwald

Residence

A personal dream of building a double spiral chimney combined with walks on the streets of Manhattan and admiring the brickwork of old buildings provided the inspirations for this winning entry.

Masonry contactor Adam Buckwald did not develop a formal plan for the project, but instead relied on his experience to gather ideas for the final design. The chimney used 2600 face brick and 310 (water table) shape brick with a smooth and hard-to-cut surface that matched Buckwald's desired look. Designer flue pots sit at the top of the double spiral chimney. A steel angle form off-set by a typical spacer produced the spiral with accuracy.

Buckwald spent about 150 man-days building his chimney.
