Perry residence: Uwharrie Point, N.C

Masonry Construction, July-August, 2005

Chimneys are a very important element in the Perry residence. The owners wanted to maximize their view of Baden Lake so the masonry contractor designed three chimneys (two interior and one exterior) with numerous recessed panels and intricate caps that allow approaching visitors to view the lake through the structures.

The owners made two other stipulations: use ogees on the steps and sills and cover all exposed lintels and steel. A Halfen anchoring system was used so that all arches and free-standing flat surfaces were drilled and attached with no exposed metal. Many areas of the veneer appear to be suspended in air. Basic arch support principles were applied to eliminate the use of exposed metal around the lake side of the home. The patio is supported by masonry columns and arches. Two massive, curved retaining walls were required because of the steep terrain and slope to the lake.

The construction required 9780 man hours and 210,000 masonry units.
