Sniff Hall: Tri-State University: Angola, Ind

Masonry Construction, July-August, 2005

This college structure had withstood the elements and two fires during its 117-year history. Time eventually caught up with the facility and it was in dire need of significant work (below).

The restoration project included chemical cleaning, replacing about 1500 spalled brick, installation of a new limestone cornice on the west elevation of the tower, rebuilding a portion of the wall below the roof line, and 100% tuckpointing. The pointing included a flush joint in the masonry and a bead joint in the stone base. Different color brick on the upper portion of the tower and the discolored brick from the lowered roof were stained to maintain a uniform appearance. Upon completion (right), the masonry received a water repellant and the stone foundation got a water repellant and consolidation treatment.
