Cleveland bricklayer a finalist in national contest

Masonry Construction, Sept, 2006 by Ron Holzhauer

Americans will get to vote on a different kind of "Idol" this summer: the five finalists in the 15th annual Dickies "American Worker of the Year" Awards. David Bildstein, a steel mill bricklayer from Cleveland, will compete against a school principal, bike mechanic, ER nurse, and electrical lineman

The five finalists were selected from among thousands of entries collected online and through the Dickies American Worker of the Year Mobile Tour. Entrants were asked to make audio recordings or write 100 words or less about why their nominee represents "the spirit of the American worker."

Masons across the country are urged to vote for one of their own at www.worker oftheyear.com. Everyone voting by the October 7 deadline will be entered to win a free trip to Las Vegas. The top vote getter will be named the 2006 "American Worker of the Year" and receive a 2007 Ford F150 truck and numerous other prizes

Bildstein comes from a long line of bricklayers and stone masons--27 generations, in fact. His is the oldest family in Local 5, Cleveland, where a Bildstein has been a member for almost 120 years.
