Retail sales grow, gas prices fall

Holiday retail forecasts look healthy, thanks to strong Thanksgiving weekend sales, while lower gas prices bode well for consumers and pool and spa companies alike.
The National Retail Federation said Thanksgiving holiday shopping jumped 22 percent from a year ago to nearly $28 billion. Though some retailers reported flat sales compared with 2004, the NRF said more than 60 million shoppers hit stores on "Black Friday."
Wal-Mart was the big winner that weekend, but forecasts for Christmas sales look bright for pool/spa retailers who sell high-end toys, barbecues, billiards and other holiday-friendly gifts. Simultaneously, oil prices the first week of December fell below $58 per barrel due to mild weather.
Pool and spa industry stocks fared well. Textron ( 10.82) led the NYSE, and Tecumseh Products ( 1.87) set the pace on the NASDAQ.
