Anything goes: the 2004 International Awards of Excellence have it all … and then some

Pool & Spa News, Dec 24, 2004 by Shabnam Mogharabi

The entries for this year's APSP International Awards of Excellence run the gamut from traditional angular pools to lagoon-style ponds.

"The setting, the lighting, the plants--all of it serves to make an attractive project," says Peter Cattano, president of Paco Pools & Spas Ltd. in Baldwin, N.Y., and one of the judges on this year's awards panel. "I try to look past the photograph and ask, 'What did this builder go through to build this pool?'

"When you're looking at nearly 700 photographs, it's difficult," Cattano adds. "I think each judge sees every job with a different eye."

The judges ended up sorting through a whopping 672 entries, submitted by 117 companies. More than 145 awards were handed out across the gold, silver, bronze and awards of merit categories. In all, seven countries and 25 states were among the participants.

On the next several pages, prepare to be wowed by the winning projects. And when you're all set to design your next awe-inspiring paradise, keep this in mind: Your options are as vast as your own imagination.
