Designer's challenge: 10 tips for enhancing the look of aboveground poolscapes

Pool & Spa News, March 12, 2004 by Margot Carmichael Lester

9 Freshen up the walls,

Some older pools lack aesthetically pleasing side panels. Does the manufacturer offer replacement options or wall coatings you could suggest? If not, a contractor could be hired to build a surround that upgrades the look. Again, forge relationships with builders to handle these projects for you.

Hint: New spray paints on the market are specifically designed to work on plastic. Consider commissioning an artist to create a subtle or splashy work of art on the wall panels.

10 Enhance the furnishings.

One final way to transform the pool area is to upgrade the patio furniture. Choose items that reflect the client's lifestyle--and think beyond chaise lounges and picnic tables. How about a gas grill? Or a wet bar?

With casual furniture and accessories available in a wide range of prices, your customers should find something to fit their budget. As a plus, the furniture can be added piece by piece over time to create a high-style look without breaking the bank.

If you don't currently offer outdoor furniture, consider expanding your product line to include furnishings, or establish a relationship with a patio store with favorable pricing.
