Customers learn about general pool operation, chemical balance and pool-cleaning techniques. Many purchase chemicals immediately after the class or return within a few days. "Almost everyone buys after they absorb [all the information];' Clifford says.

For added education, consumers also tan turn to Web sites hosted by manufacturers for basic information on pool and spa startups, openings and closing. As a bonus, some sites offer printable instructions regarding chemical use and storage, as well as details on nearby retailers and water-testing locations.
