Downtown revitalization imposes a new obligation on cities to consider the caliber of the environments they build. I believe, like many others, that an individual's self-image is based on the quality of his or her daily life. The design of that quotidian environment is not just about meeting functional needs. It's also about achieving the social and spatial connections that architecture can provide.
