According to Merrill Lynch, at the end of last year some 7.1 million individuals in the world possessed assets equivalent to or greater than $1 million. This was an increase of 20,000 over the year before. Of these, Japan had roughly 1.2 million individuals entitled to join the club, or roughly 70 percent of the total 1.73 million residing in Asia.
