In the drive to IP, the saying for incumbent carriers is still one of evolution, not revolution. Building on the success of its converged last-mile solution set, Zhone Technologies has introduced its VoiceFLEX Voice Gateway module for the MALC (Multi-Access Line Concentrator) product line that will enable carriers to migrate from TDM to packet on their terms. With this new feature set, the MALC enables a full suite of voice, data and video services over circuit or packet-based networks with TDM support for both GR-303 and V5.2, ATM support for AAL2 and ELCP as well as VoIP support for SIP and MGCP standard implements--all in one platform.

VoiceFLEX will allow Zhone's customers to deploy the MALC as a remote loop carrier or CO terminal. As a CO terminal, the MALC, when combined with the VoiceFLEX gateway, can reduce the required number of interface groups on the switch, providing capacity for over 52,000 subscribers in one 19-inch chassis.

The MALC with VoiceFLEX can be configured to deliver a range of narrow-band and broadband services for residential and business subscribers. They include traditional TDM POTS, specials, T1/E1, DSL, Ethernet and PON. Such capability allows a carrier to migrate to VoIP without impacting current services, and deliver new services over existing lines.
