Soon Starbucks and T-Mobile won't be the only hot spots in town. Although these players have dominated the hot spot wireless arena, cable operators are not going to let this opportunity slip by and neither is Nortel. The company has launched its WLAN Cable Access Point 6220, a wireless LAN product specifically designed for the cable market. It allows cable operators to provide access to high speed Internet and network services at hot spots in public locations and residential neighborhoods via an 802.11 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz connection.

Cable operators can establish hot spots quickly and generate new revenue opportunities by allowing people to access the network either as cable subscribers or by paying access fees. The WLAN Cable Access Point utilizes standards-compliant DOCSIS modems for network connectivity.

In a high-speed data service deployment, the solution consists of three components: a strand-mounted access point unit; a corporate services unit that receives wireless signals from the APU; and a choice of directional or omni-directional antennas.
