Nortel has released a key enhancement to its Optical Metro 5100/5200 C/DWDM platforms to enable enterprises, cable providers and other traditional providers to leverage optical network technology to deliver various GigE and storage connectivity services. The vendor has enhanced the product with a 10-Gigabit Muxponder card. Available in July, the 10-Gigabit Muxponder will enable economic, scaleable GigE transport, allowing cable operators, for example, to improve network utilization by supporting more than 2000 digital video streams per Muxponder card. Cable operators can take advantage of the burgeoning video-on-demand market with more efficient GigE connectivity. In addition, the Muxponder card can also address storage networking applications, an application enterprise customers are increasingly running over optical networks.
