Fiber Optics Weekly Update, June 7, 2002
Edison Carrier Solutions, a regional "carrier's carrier" based in Southern California, will be the first service provider in the United States to commercially deploy the LambdaUnite MultiService Switch (MSS), a next-generation optical system from Lucent Technologies as part of an end-to-end solution, the companies announced.
The Lucent solution, which also includes the Metropolis DMX Access Multiplexer platform as well as software and services, will allow Edison Carrier Solutions, which serves the wholesale telecommunications market, to provide services on a common backbone, thus increasing capacity while helping to reduce equipment and power costs as well as space requirements in a crowded central office environment.

The LambdaUnite MSS brings together switching capacity, functionality, density and flexibility into one small piece of equipment and its standards-compliant technology enables customers to seamlessly integrate with existing backbone and metro optical networks. It provides a bridge between data-intense metro networks and high-speed optical core networks, connecting cities, campuses and corporate networks to larger, long-haul public networks. Metropolis DMX, which is part of Lucent's Metropolis portfolio of metro optical networking products, provides next-generation SONET capabilities. It is an integrated SONET/Ethernet metro access multiplexer that, working together with LambdaUnite MSS, will enable Edison Carrier Solutions to cost-effectively meet its current metro access needs while providing a solid foundation for future bandwidth and service growth.
