Optical equipment market down 55 percent

Fiber Optics Weekly Update, June 20, 2003

Optical Component and Module Manufacturers had total revenues of $340 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2003, according to Velocity Industry Research and Consulting, an industry research and consulting firm. This represents a 55 percent decline from the same period last year. The market declined approximately 43 percent in 2001 and 66 percent in 2002.

The manufacturers with the highest revenues for the quarter ended March 31, 2003 were JDS Uniphase, Agilent, Bookham, and Finisar. Bookham enters the top four with its acquisition of Nortel Optical Components. The recently published Optical Components and Modules Global Market Share Report by Velocity estimates market shares for optical component and module manufacturers for 2000-2002 and for the quarter ended March 31,2003. The report includes all communications related applications, such as telecom, datacom, and CATV. With the report, Velocity provides the additional service of providing updates for the remaining calendar quarters in 2003.
