Oxford Networks and Optical Solutions Inc. announce the first fiber to the premises—FTTP—deployment in the state of Maine

Fiber Optics Weekly Update, August 1, 2003

Optical Solutions announced that Oxford Networks will deploy its FiberPath platform to the Lewiston and Auburn communities in Maine, a service area with over 60,000 residents approximately 30 miles northwest of Portland. Oxford Networks started as a local telephone and telegraph company back in 1900. The company has since aggressively expanded into a multi market full service telecommunications, data and video company, serving residential and business customers throughout central and western Maine, and also providing long haul fiber optic services between Bangor and New Hampshire. Lewiston and Auburn are known as the "Cities of the Androscoggin," and lie on the banks of the Androscoggin River in Maine. Lewiston and Auburn sit between the natural settings of Maine's western lakes and mountains and the state's rocky, picturesque coastlines.

Oxford Networks is deploying Optical Solutions' FiberPath system, which is based on a passive optical network (PON) architecture. FiberPath will be delivering high-speed data, hundreds of channels of switched digital video and multiple lifeline-quality voice connections, all on the same fiber network. FiberPath will help position Oxford Networks to deliver high definition television (HDTV) as that new service expands its availability.
