General Dynamics unit wins $9 billion contract

The U.S. Air Force qualified eight teams of contractors for as much as $9 billion in communications and computer systems work during the next five years. The teams, including defense industry heavyweights General Dynamics Corp., Northrop Grumman Corp., and Lockheed Martin Corp., were selected to participate in the Network Centric Solutions program.

The project will include a wide array of tasks, ranging from telephones to video communications to information technology and security. Related hardware, such as cables and wiring, also may figure in to the development.
