"Pavement cable" cuts costs and time

Fiber Optics Weekly Update, Sept 17, 2004

Commscope has introduced a new fiber-optic "pavement cable" that it said is specifically designed to reduce installation costs and construction time. The cable can be used by MSOs to deploy fiber to commercial, residential, and small to mid-sized businesses, as well as for enterprise applications such as metropolitan and campus sidewalks, roadways, and parking lots.

The fiber-optic pavement cable, which is available in up to 72-fiber count, has a gel-filled central tube cable encased in a smooth-wall, welded copper armor that provides it with enhanced fiber protection and water blocking characteristics.

The cable's patent-pending design allows it to be installed with a minimum disruption of day-to-day traffic as it requires only a 10mm wide by 8cm deep groove to be cut into a sidewalk, roadway, or parking lot. The cable is placed at the bottom of the slot and held in place by a closed-cell, foamed backer rod, and the opening is sealed.
