Southern Baptist Historical Society contributions update - News Notes - Brief Article

Baptist History and Heritage, Summer-Fall, 1999

The SBHS is pleased to announce that financial contributions from Baptist state conventions / history programs and from colleges and universities to the SBHS's operating budget have reached an all-time high in 1999. The SBHS deeply appreciates such gifts and uses them wisely. As of October 8:

1. Thirteen state conventions/ history programs have donated $40,260 in 1999, an 82.7 percent increase over all of 1998. The Baptist General Convention of Texas remains the largest contributor.

2. Nineteen colleges and universities have donated $16,125, a 50.3 percent increase over all of 1998. Schools which have given for the first time in 1999 include: Anderson (SC), Belmont (TN), Howard Payne (TX), Judson (AL), Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX), Missouri Baptist (MO), Ouachita (AR), Southwest Baptist (MO), Union (TN), and Wayland (TX). Further, Georgetown (KY) has pledged $1000 by December 31.

3. In addition, church gifts are growing and will likely break the record by year's end. Many new churches have contributed to the SBHS's operating budget for the first time in 1999: Calvary Baptist Church, Hannibal, MO; the First Baptist Churches of Dothan, AL, Decatur, GA, and West Point, MS; Haddock Baptist Church, Haddock, GA; St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church, New Orleans, LA; the University Baptist Churches of Fort Worth, TX, and Shawnee, OK; Wilshire Baptist Church, Dallas, TX; and Woodmont Baptist Church, Nashville, TN.

The society's five primary means of raising money include: contributions, member dues, product sales, endowment earnings, and its Baptist History Book Publishing Program (currently being designed and promoted).
