Mobile Internet, The, Nov, 2004

The mobile telecommunication industry has embraced the 9th 3G World Congress & Exhibition by announcing a range of infrastructure initiatives that are destined to provide a better platform for new services over the coming year.

Siemens, Alcatel, Huawei Technologies, ZTE, and Qualcomm all used the 3G World Congress & Exhibition to issue major announcements.

Siemens presented its HSDPA (High Speed Download Packet Access) Demonstrator for the first time, with visitors able to test the performance of the system under real-time conditions, using video streaming to access movie trailers and content downloads at very high data rates.

Alcatel demonstrated how live television and video streaming can be implemented on mobile phones and how content from various media partners can now generate new revenue streams for operators. The company also outlined how users can leverage its technology to more easily access email and other data files while moving back and forth between DSL, GPRS/EDGE, UMTS and Wi-Fi access.

Huawei Technologies unveiled its Advanced CDMA 2000 E2E Solution, which will help operators to achieve profits more swiftly via 1xEV-DO broadband. In particular, Huawei is aiming to provide wide coverage and cost-effective access to the network to enable those in rural areas of China to experience voice and data services via wireless telecom technology.

ZTE Corporation introduced the CDMA 1xEV-DO and CDMA Release A technologies and solutions with a confirmation that the company's Research and Development team have succeeded in doubling the speed of its previous CDMA Release. A formal market launch is due soon.
