Mobile Internet, The, Dec, 2003

Openwave Systems announced that China Unicom has expanded its relationship with Openwave and recently deployed additional licenses of Openwave Mobile Access Gateway (MAG), the most proven, interoperable and standards-compliant WAP gateway available today.

With 85 million voice subscribers, China Unicom is one of the world's largest wireless network operators. In May of 2003 the company launched a data service called Unicom Unlimited on its 3G CDMA network and in a matter of months attracted 1.5 million data subscribers, making it one of the fastest growing and most successful data services in the world. Based on the rapid growth of the service, China Unicom looked to expand its MAG licensing agreement with Openwave, adding another 3.5 million WAP licenses to the Unicom network, making the total of WAP licenses 5 million.
