T-Mobile tests A-GPS system

Mobile Internet, The, Jan, 2005

Siemens Communications Group will develop a new solution for the Assisted Global Positioning System (A-GPS) of T-Mobile Czech Republic. T-Mobile is currently testing the solution that is expected to be launched commercially in the third quarter of 2005. The new service will be able to locate the position of a user. The A-GPS technology transmits the satellite data utilizing the radio link between a base station and a mobile phone.

Currently, T-Mobile operates the public mobile communications network on the GSM standard in the 900 and 1800MHz bands. It also holds a license to provide third-generation mobile network, UMTS. T-Mobile BV, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, has a 61 percent stake in T-Mobile, while Ceske radiokomunikace (CRa), a telecom company, holds a 39 percent stake. The company subscriber base is pegged at 4 million, making it the second largest mobile phone operator in the Czech Republic.
