The planned launch of this network follows a successful trial of 1xEV-DO technology completed by the two companies in November 2002 that revealed businesses and consumers in the D.C. area can expect average data speeds of 300-800 kilobits per second using the 1xEV-DO network supplied by Lucent. This enables Verizon Wireless to provide businesses with secure access to corporate applications stored behind corporate firewalls, and consumers with high-speed Internet access from any location. Verizon Wireless customers will be able to access the high-speed network by equipping their laptop PCs and PDAs with ixE V-DO wireless modem cards. By providing secure mobile IP VPN connections on this high-speed data network, business customers can access the Verizon Wireless network as an extension of their corporate LAN or intranet, allowing them to work from any location with the same level of speed and security they experience in the office. The ixE V-DO network can be accessed wherever a cell phone can be used including airports and customer locations.
