FCC postpones auction - Government Regulations - United States. Federal Communications Commission - Brief Article

Mobile Internet, The, June, 2002

The FCC has postponed the auction of channels 60 to 69 until January 2003. The auction has been postponed several times and was due to take place on June 19. The spectrum, channels 60 to 69, is now occupied by television broadcasters who are under a federal mandate to vacate the spectrum when digital TV penetration hits 85 percent or by 2007, whichever comes first.

Of course, television broadcasters and wireless phone companies are at odds. The broadcasters want millions to vacate the channels, spectrum which they were given for free by the federal government years ago.
