According to the Superintendence of Telecommunications the number of mobile users reached 1.7 million in April while the number of public telephones was 7,202. Porta, a subsidiary of Mexican-based America Movil, closed the month with 1.0 million mobile customers, or 59.7% market share, of which just over 92% use pre-paid services.

Porta also has 2,695 public phones in operation. BellSouth, with 40.3% market share, has 698,730 mobile customers and 4,507 public phones. Nearly 73% of BellSouth's mobile users are pre-paid customers.
