PLDT joins hands with Asia-Pacific telcos for wireless broadband

Philippines based ePLDT, PLDT's information technology division, has signed contracts with telecom companies for providing wireless broadband roaming services in the Asia-Pacific region. It has increased its stake in Airborne Access (Wi-Fi) company from 1.9 percent to 51 percent in August 2005.

The company has entered into an agreement with Starhub, Maxis Malaysia, T-Mobile USA, Hongkong CSL, and NTT Communications to give Wi-Fi facilities in Singapore, Malaysia, USA, Hong Kong, and Japan, respectively. Ray C. Espinosa (President of ePLDT and PLDT's Director) stated that the company is planning to sign agreement with True Thailand, NTT, and Korea Telecom.

He also said that the country is going to be the fastest-developing Wi-Fi market in Asia-Pacific region by 2005-end. According to analysts, telecom companies will get a new avenue for generating revenues, by focusing more on Wi-Fi and WiMAX.
