Ramiro Ortiz - In Play - BankUnited, A Savings Bank - Brief Article

South Florida CEO, Feb, 2003

A lot of the success [of this bank] you owe to Mehdi Ghomeshi. My job is now to take it to the next level.... I have some tremendous latitude to do this. If I screw up it's only myself I have to look at in the mirror.

THE PLAYER: Ramiro Ortiz, President and COO of BankUnited

LATEST PLAY: Jumped from megabank SunTrust to replace retiring Mehdi Ghomeshi at BankUnited, South Florida's largest locally based financial institution

BACKGROUND: Was chairman president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Miami. Chairman of the Greater Miami of Commerce 2001-2002, led post-9/11 recovery efforts in Miami-Dade. Began his banking career in 1968 with Landmark Bank as a computer trainee, later serving at Dania Bank and NCR Corp. Joined SunTrust in 1981 as Regional Vice President of IT Services. Named Miami President in 1996 and CEO in 2002. Highly active in the United Way, member of Mesa Redonda, Orange Bowl Committee.

AMBITION: Wants to refocus BankUnited in four ways: to "dominate" the commercial market for $5 million to $40 million companies; to implement a "micro" retail strategy, with different tactics for 10 or 11 local submarkets; to focus on international private banking, starting with mortgages for foreign nationals; to create a solid wealth management program.
