Last call - Development

South Florida CEO, March, 2003

Coconut Grove's legendary Taurus Bar & Grill is considered to be one of the last remaining pieces of the old Grove--the once groovy, free-spirited artist's colony that has since been overtaken by developers and transformed into a tourist destination. Now you can say goodbye to the old wooden watering hole, originally built in 1919 as a proper ladies' tea room and for years one of the few authentic pubs to be found in South Florida. The Taurus will now make way for a $23 million condominium with ground-floor retail. Where regulars once casually drank icy draft beers and ate burgers, new residents will shop in a gourmet market and eat upscale Italian food. Part of the original structure will become part of the condominium complex, but, call it what you will, this is another sign of times--and it will never be the same.--TW
