* Memphis-based Union Planters Bank, which has 70 offices and $5 billion in assets in South Florida, is merging with Birmingham, Ala.-based Regions Financial Corp. Banking operations for the new company, the country's 12th-largest in terms of deposits ($56 billion), will be based in Birmingham. The company will take the Regions name.
