Mining expansion allowed - Big Deals

South Florida CEO, June, 2002

The Army Corps of Engineers is opening up 5,409 acres of wetlands between the Everglades and the Florida Turnpike in Miami-Dade County for rock mining. Ten mining companies will be issued 10-year permits to mine the land. In compensation the companies must finance -- through a 5 cent tax on every ton of limestone rock mined -- the restoration of 7,500 acres of nearby wetlands.
