On the waterfront

South Florida CEO, May, 2004 by Barbara Perkins

Talk about corporate power. Thanks to a couple of Miami-based corporations, New York City will be getting $150 million in upgrades for piers in Manhattan and Brooklyn. After months of negotiations with economic development groups, Miami-based Carnival Corp. and Norwegian Cruise Lines have guaranteed some $200 million worth of dock fees for the city, so long as the facilities are up to par. While it's not exactly off the Caribbean, New York positions ships for seasonal travel to Bermuda and Canada, and for trans-Atlantic voyages. The problem: existing piers are too short and narrow for the latest class of mega ships. Meanwhile, Miami's Royal Caribbean Cruise line has announced plans to build its own cruise facility at a former military terminal in Newark, New Jersey.
