Building heights reduced - Big Deals

South Florida CEO, August, 2002

* Fort Lauderdale city commissioners recently voted to reduce the building heights of future construction on the city's beach south of Oakland Park Boulevard - from 300 feet to 240 feet, a 20-percent decrease. The restriction, however, will not affect existing buildings or projects already approved by the commission.

If a building is destroyed by a natural disaster, however, it will have to be rebuilt to the new height specs. The move was intended to protect the beach from overdevelopment.
