Deal spotlight: FPL cleanup - Big deals: following the money - Florida Power and Light Co - Brief Article
South Florida CEO, July, 2003
* Florida Power & Light has agreed to spend at least $60 million, and up to $100 million, to clean up and upgrade its Port Everglades power plant. FPL says the re-engineering will reduce soot emissions by 70 percent. FPL will begin the process in September 2004 and complete it by November 2007. Critics say the plan will do nothing, however, about sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions.
In the meantime, FPL plans to pass along the cost to its customers, increasing rates by about 25 cents per month over a period of 12 years. That, however must still be approved by state regulators.
