* Macy's and Burdines department stores in Florida will operate under a joint name come February of next year, says parent company Federated Department Stores. The stores--56 Burdines and seven Macy's statewide--will go by the name Burdines-Macy's. All of Cincinnati-based Federated's regional department stores nationwide will undergo similar hyphenations with Macy's.

While no layoffs have yet to be announced for Burdines' 9,000 employees, it's still unknown what the name combination's ultimate effect will be. Miami-based Burdines has been in business as "the Florida store" for 105 years. It is also unknown what will happen at malls where there are both a Burdines and Macy's--such as at Aventura Mall--or in Plantation, where the two are in close proximity.
