Jesus Diaz Jr.: "that's the fun—to grow your reach. We want to sell more newspapers."

South Florida CEO, August, 2005

The Player: Jesus Diaz Jr., 44.

Latest Play: Diaz was named publisher of The Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald and chairman of The Miami Herald Publishing Co. in February and assumed the post July 16. He replaces Alberto Ibarguen. who resigned to become president of the Miami-based John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Background: The Havana native immigrated to Atlanta in 1970 aboard the "freedom flights" that brought thousands of Cuban refugees to the United States. He joined the Herald in 1993 as director of finance, later becoming chief financial officer and vice president. He left in 1996 to work for the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. as a financial services executive. He returned as the Miami Herald Publishing Co.'s general manager in 2002.

Ambition: Diaz says his No. 1 priority is to expand readership of all the Herald's products by offering more online audio and video components, and improving the quality of niche publications and public radio news reports. "We have to find ways to become more relevant to our readers," he says. "We have to find more avenues to deliver our news and information."
