Taguig, Philippines-based geothermal energy developer PNOC Energy Development Corporation (PNOC-EDC) recently announced it has awarded a 2.3-billion-peso (about $41.6-million) contract to Tokyo, Japan-based Kanematsu Corporation for the expansion of the Palinpinon geothermal complex located in the Philippine province of Negros Oriental.

According to PNOC-EDC, Kanematsu is expected to expand the facility's generating capacity by 20 megawatts (MW) through the construction of a third electricity generator, dubbed "Palinpinon III," as well as the installation of new transmission lines.

PNOC-EDC chairman Sergio Apostol noted that groundwork for the project could potentially begin in "two or three weeks," with construction scheduled to be completed in two years.
