Environment Colorado, Sierra Club File Renewables Initiative
0 Comments | Renewable Energy Today, Feb 6, 2004
Environment Colorado and the Sierra Club recently announced they have filed a ballot initiative to increase the use of renewable energy in Colorado that will require electricity providers to get 10 percent of their electricity sales from renewable energy by 2012 and 20 percent by 2022.
"Colorado is blessed with abundant wind, sun and other renewable resources waiting to be tapped, yet only one percent of our electricity comes from these sources," said Sierra Club Rocky Mountain Chapter chair Greg Casini. "By increasing use of renewable energy, we can protect our air and water, and build our economy at the same time."

The groups noted that while the initiative is expected to spur new development of solar, wind and geothermal power, it also includes some fuel cells and biomass.
According to Environment Colorado and the Sierra Club, the initiative, which was filed with the Secretary of State's office earlier this month, "now proceeds through a series of hearings regarding language and title."
