SDG&E Seeks Solar Power Installations for Company Buildings

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) recently announced it has filed a request with the California Public Utilities Commission to place solar panels on its roofs and other property to help bolster the use of renewable energy resources in the San Diego region.

If the request is approved, SDG&E said it will seek bids to install the panels on its buildings, with the generated energy to power both company facilities and its customers' homes and businesses. SDG&E estimates that the solar displays will be capable of generating between one to three megawatts of electricity.

"For several years SDG&E has been aggressively purchasing renewable energy for use by its customers," said SDG&E vice president of procurement Terry Farrelly. "We are committed to supplying 20 percent of our customers' total energy needs from renewable resources like wind and solar by 2010."
