Local VT Farm Produces 'Cow Power' From Waste Methane

Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) recently announced that Blue Spruce Farm has begun producing electricity by burning waste methane gas for the CVPS Cow Power voluntary renewable energy program.

According to CVPS, Blue Spruce Farm collects its cow manure in a concrete tank, where it is heated up, with methane gas generated and captured. CVPS said the farm expects to produce approximately 1.7 million kilowatt-hours of energy per year.

"Our goal is to create a brand new market, allowing customers a renewable energy choice, and providing farmers with new income and manure management opportunities, and we're off to a good start," said CVPS program director Dave Dunn. "CVPS Cow Power gives new meaning to the old saying: 'One man's trash is another man's treasure'."
