Senate Approves Renewable Energy Usage Mandate

The Associated Press (AP) recently reported that the U.S. Senate narrowly approved late last week a provision mandating that a minimum of 10 percent of the power generated by utilities derive from renewable resources by 2020.

Separately, AP noted that the Senate Committee on Finance approved a package including incentives for the use of alternative transportation, energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.

According to AP, the package contains such provisions as nearly $3.8 billion in tax credits for the conservation of energy and the employment of such energy-efficient technologies as solar panels.

AP said committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) revealed that the package will be proposed this week as an amendment to the energy bill before the Senate.
