DOE Awards $16.5 Million for Renewable, Efficiency Efforts

Department of Energy (DOE) secretary Samuel Bodman announced earlier this week that DOE will provide $16.5 million for 178 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in 42 states.

According to DOE, state energy offices will use the funds to improve the energy efficiency of schools, homes and other buildings; promote energy-efficient industrial technologies; and support renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and biomass.

DOE noted that $512,501 is being awarded to five biomass projects, with the funds to support the development of innovative state or local incentives and projects that will facilitate increased market development for bio-based power, fuels and products, while $278,340 is earmarked for five state wind energy support efforts, with the funds to support both projects seeking information on U.S wind resources at levels above normal measurements, often capped at 60 meters, and projects to identify opportunities for wind applications in the treatment, movement and use of water resources.

Additionally, $250,000 is being awarded to a solar technology project that will examine the internal and external maximum temperature conditions in which micro inverters for photovoltaic applications will function.

The funding for the projects is being provided through DOE State Energy Program Special Projects competitive grants, and will be awarded this month.
