Iberdrola S.A. of Bilbao, Spain, recently acquired two U.K. wind power projects with a combined capacity of more than 20 megawatts. The projects represent the first step in Iberdrola's strategy to expand into the United Kingdom, where the company anticipates reaching 200 MW of wind power by 2011.

Iberdrola purchased the 18 MW Clachan Flats project in Scotland from AMEC Wind Energy and the 2.44 MW Darracott wind farm in Devon, England, from West Coast Energy. Both projects are expected to start operation next year.

The company states that they aim to grow internationally by adding installations to those already under way in Greece, Portugal, France and Brazil. Iberdrola has opened offices in Birmingham, England; Rennes, France; Rome, Italy; Berlin, Germany; Warsaw, Poland; and Washington, D.C.

Iberdrola had installed wind power of 4,004 MW after the first half of 2006. The firm forecasts reaching 6,200 MW in 2008 and 10,000 MW in 2011.
