Lamar University Receives Funding for FC, Laser Research

Fuel Cells Today, July 20, 2004

U.S. Representative Nick Lampson (D-TX) recently announced that the U.S. House of Representatives included $2.5 million in the FY 05 Defense Appropriations Conference Report for Lamar University and the U.S. Army's Advanced Laser Electric Power (ALEP) research program, which is designed to establish the feasibility of using alternative advanced power source and energy storage devices, such as fuel cells (FCs), for high- and low-power lasers.

According to Lampson, the program also aims to develop enhanced FC membranes, catalysts and thermal management, as well as validate FC applications for a variety of laser power requirements for the army.

"This funding is crucial to making ALEP a first-rate scientific program, but we can still do more," said Lampson. "I look forward to working with Lamar University and America's fine military to expanding funding for ALEP so that all residents of southeast Texas, and all Americans for that matter, can benefit from this very important project."
