ReliOn to Install, Test Fuel Cell Systems for CERL

Fuel Cells Today, June 14, 2004

ReliOn recently announced it has received a $363,781 contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) for the installation and testing of fuel cell systems in "critical" military applications.

Under the contract, ReliOn said it will install Independence 1000 one-kilowatt (kW) fuel cells and outdoor enclosures in a total of nine application sites at the following military facilities -- Gabreski Air National Guard Base in New York, Fort Rucker Army Base in Alabama and Fort Lewis Army Base in Washington.

The company said the fuel cells are expected to provide backup power to "ensure continuous operations for equipment that enables aircraft landing guidance systems and telecommunications systems."

ReliOn noted that the operation is scheduled for a period of one year, during which daily testing will be conducted and monitored remotely by the company. The first installation is scheduled for later this month at Fort Lewis.
